Yes, we did it!!! We traveled fourteen hours to Chicago with a three month old baby. Let me tell you, he was amazing! We had planned on this trip for several years and I’m glad we did chicken out. The first day of travel, we drove for twelve hours straight and he did not fuss one bit.
During the trip, I have found several tips to help make traveling easier. First, always have someone(preferably mommy) sit next to baby on long trips. Also, when you want a stretch/potty break so does baby. We always let him out of his car seat, walked him around and changed him at every stop. This seemed to keep him calm and because he was always changed, it made me feel better about him being in the car seat so long. Another thing that made the trip easier was bottled water to fill fresh bottles.
When we arrived in Illinois, we stopped in Dwight to take the Amtrak train to Chicago. For this trip, we decided to pack a much lighter umbrella stroller since he was able to hold his head up and sit with help. Also, I made sure to downsize our luggage because we were only staying three days and I made sure to bring along the travel size versions of everything.
Most people thought I was crazy for traveling with a three month old, but it was so important to me that I show myself that we could easily do the traveling that Kevin and I loved to do before Ethan. It just took a little more thought and preparation than before. We did it and we loved it! It is so important that we be able to share our love of adventure and travel with our son. Next trip will be Ethan’s first trip to Disney at only 4 months old!
